The Forces of
Change Are at Work
For more than a century now, potato farms have been getting bigger and
fewer. Today, R.D. Offutt, with approximately 65,000 acres, is acclaimed
as the largest potato farm in the world. His farming operations involve
multiple production areas, including the Red River Valley and Columbia
Basin.
Among the other major potato operations are Larsen Farms, Wada Farms and
Cranny Farms, all in Idaho. Larson Farms encompasses 22,000 acres of potatoes;
Wada Farms, 12,000 acres; and Cranny Farms, 7,000.
The forces of change are at work in the potato industry, made clear during
a presentation given during the Montana Seed Potato Seminar, held Nov.
11-12 at the Best Western GranTree Inn in Bozeman. Speaking was Dr. Joseph
F. Guenthner, a professor of agriculture economics at the University of
Idaho.
