Seed Grower Viability Recognized as Important

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Do larger commercial potato operations really care about the economic viability of their seed sources and whether they are making it financially?

Absolutely, according to a report given during the 42nd Annual Montana Seed Potato Seminar, held Nov. 6-7 at the Best Western GranTree Inn in Bozeman, Mont.

Rodney Larson, who has been purchasing seed potatoes for 20 years for AgriNorthwest’s sprawling farming complex in the Columbia Basin, made it clear that the company is plenty worried about the seed potato industry, the people involved, their economic viability and where the industry is heading.

“We worry about what’s happening with housing developments and established growers selling out,” he told the group. “We worry about dads training their sons. We want someone around to grow our seed for us.”

Multiple Presentations
Larson’s presentation, “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow,” was one of eight during the day. Others giving reports were: Dr. Mike Sun, Bozeman, Mont., director of the Montana Seed Potato Certification Program; Dr. Jonathan Whitworth, Aberdeen, Idaho, a USDA-ARS research plant pathologist; Gary Adams, Helena, Mont., Montana plant health director, USDA-APHIS; Dr. Jeff Stark, Idaho Falls, Idaho, a professor and director of the University of Idaho’s Potato Variety Development Program; Jason Kim, Manhattan, Mont., an innovative seed potato grower; Tamara Hall, Bozeman, Mont., a motivational humorist and seminar presenter; and Randy Hardy and David Frazer, representing the U.S. Potato Board. Hardy, who farms in Oakley, Idaho, is immediate past chairman of the board. Fraser, Denver, Colo., serves on the staff as vice president of industry communications and policy.

Cost-cutting Efforts
During his presentation, Larson touched on what AgriNorthwest management is doing to trim costs and become more cost-efficient. One major step forward was moving to a wheat-corn-potato rotation. Through judicious planning, management has been able to substantially reduce the number of large and medium tractors, disc plows, chisel choppers, rippers, harrows and potato planters used.

One additional significant cost-saving change was getting rid of all of the company’s corn and wheat harvesters. Both crops are now custom harvested.

Adapting GPS also has helped increase the efficiency of field equipment used, Larson pointed out. For example, at one AgriNorthwest farm, he said one tractor, equipped with a GPS-guidance system, is now used around-the-clock to prepare beds for 5,000 acres of potatoes.

The company also is selectively applying fertilizer. “I firmly believe that recipes have a place in farming,” Larson told the group. “There is a need to artfully apply science to farming.”

On potato seed issues, Larson noted that leaf roll has not been a problem in recent years, mainly due to the use of Cruiser and Admire. Mosaic, however, is a concern. He believes PVY presence is reducing overall yields.

“We also had a lot of seed with blackleg last year, up to 5 percent,” he reported. “There were yield reductions of up to 4 tons per acre in some fields.”

Scab also is an issue because it allows various pathogens to enter into tubers, Larson said.

“We also don’t like rocks,” Larson stressed, noting that they damage cutters and pick planters.

Managing PVY
Dr. Jonathan Whitworth addressed the topic, “Strategy of Managing PVY in Growing Early Generation Seed Potatoes.”

“The ability to manage PVY in seed potatoes has become increasingly important since 2002,” he said. “This is about the time that new PVY strains started to be detected across North America.”

The new PVY strains produce milder mosaic symptoms than PVYo, the common strain, he explained. These factors make the traditional methods of rouging less effective.

“Unlike leafroll virus, which can be controlled with insecticides and rouging, PVY can be acquired and transmitted so quickly that existing insecticides are of little use for control of virus spread,” he said, adding that the amount and type of aphids also play a part in PVY spread. Any probing aphid whether green peach or another type that lands on potatoes can acquire and transmit PVY.

New lab tools will help aid the grower and certification agency in reducing the levels of PVY in the seed crop, Whitworth said. ELISA, a serological test, will detect all PVY strains, but cannot tell the difference between O and N:O strain types. Nonetheless, ELISA testing “remains the workhorse of all seed programs.”

On the positive side, fairly inexpensive tests are currently available to growers for use in detecting PVY and other viruses, he said. These are “quick” tests that consist of a small strip of paper imbedded with antiserum that turns color when virus-infected sap is applied to it.

In reducing PVY levels, Whitworth also stressed the importance of applying the right cultural practices, combined with a limited generation system. In terms of an effective long-term strategy, the use of resistant cultivars should be considered, he advised.

“This would be the first and best option, but the choices a grower makes for cultivars are often determined by the market,” he said. “A second best strategy would be to plant a cultivar that has good PVY-mosaic expression so that a grower can effectively rogue the seed lot.”

No Potato Cyst Nematodes Found
Updating the group on Golden Nematode and Potato Cyst Nematode concerns, Gary Adams said Montana came through this year’s voluntary testing with a clean bill of health. Neither species was detected during any of the surveys conducted.

Golden Nematodes were recently detected in Alberta and Potato Cyst Nematodes were identified in 2006 in tare dirt at a grading station in Blackfoot, Idaho, the speaker recounted, noting that the numbers were minute, but the efforts to clean up the fields where the nematodes were traced are ongoing and will continue until scientists are convinced that any surviving nematodes have been successfully eradicated.

As both species have long lives in the soil and are expensive and difficult to eliminate, Adams said the first line of defense is at the border stations — keeping them out of the production areas in the first place. The second line is through surveys. Voluntary surveys were conducted throughout all of the U.S. major potato production areas this year, including Montana.

Managing New Varieties
Dr. Jeff Stark named off a number of promising varieties and advanced selections from the Aberdeen potato breeding program, briefly describing management recommendations. Included were: Alturas, Summit Russet, Gemstar Russet, Defender, Western Russet, Blazer Russet, A9045-8, A93157-6LS, NDA5507-3Y, A95109-1 and A91814-5.

A93157-6LS, for example, was described as a dual-purpose potato most notable for its resistance to the accumulation of reducing sugars following long-term storage at temperatures as low as 42F.

“A93157-6LS is high yielding and has tubers with high specific gravity and few external defects,” Stark said. “It is resistant to PVYo, common and powdery scab, early dying and is tolerant of water stress. It is also moderately resistant to tuber early blight and soft rot. Weaknesses include susceptibility to blackspot bruise, Fusarium dry rot and early season hollow heart. A93157-6LS also has short tuber dormancy, but its ability to store at 42F can help to prolong dormancy.”

Management recommendations: Optimal plant spacing in southeast Idaho is nine to 11 inches on 36-inch wide rows, Stark said. Seed should be checked for dry rot potential and treated with an effective fungicide, if needed. The nitrogen requirement has been about 90 percent of Russet Burbank in replicated field trials. Most of the N should be applied during tuber bulking. Petiole nitrate sufficiency levels run about 3,000 to 5,000 ppm higher than Russet Burbank early in the season, about the same as Russet Burbank during mid-season, and about 2,000-4,000 ppm lower late in the season. Phosphorus requirements are 10-20 percent higher than Russet Burbank.

“A93157-6LS has good drought tolerance but soil moisture should be maintained above 65 percent ASM for optimal yield and quality,” Stark detailed. “To minimize hollow heart susceptibility in southeast Idaho, use an 8-9 inch seed piece spacing, reduce early season N applications, avoid excessive early season soil moisture and plant later, if possible. Metribuzin resistance is good at normal application rates.”

Benefits of Composting, Teas
Jason Kimm briefed the group on the benefits of compost and tea applications to the soil. The goal is to achieve greater biological balance.

There is an assumption that pests and diseases affect plants and soils “just because that is the way things happen,” Kimm told the group. The reality is that pests, diseases and weeds are indicators of an imbalanced system.

The Kimms have been applying biological teas to their soil since 2001. The composting part of their fertility formula was added in 2004. On the compost side, they are using dairy manure, experimenting with green manure till-down and fall residue management.

Among the major benefits being seen are: (1) reduced water usage down 25 percent; (2) better storage characteristics; (3) a significant decrease in pesticide use; (4) a shift from using mostly NPK formulations to trace minerals and biological fetch; and (5) higher brix levels in potatoes grown..

“There are no magic bullets,” Kimm acknowledged, advising growers interested in taking the biological approach to “Start small and do it right!”

Randy Hardy noted that members of the U.S. Potato Board “are all professionals and wake up each morning asking themselves, ‘What can we do to sell more potatoes?’”

Through the first two quarters of 2007, ending June 30, sales of bagged potatoes through supermarkets, experienced a 1.6 percent increase in dollar sales, but a 1 percent decline in pound sales, he reported. Frozen potato foodservice pound sales for the first six months of 2007 were +2.8 percent, representing the 8th straight quarterly increase in this huge segment of the potato business. Refrigerated potato pound retail sales were up 7.3 percent.

Nonetheless, there continues to be a decline in fresh market sales, and “We are looking for ways to address that challenge,” noted David Frazer, Board staffer.

Mike Sun to Retire
Dr. Mike Sun, who will be retiring as director of the Montana certified seed potato program next summer, reported another high quality seed potato crop available this year. Yields were average, there was no frost damage, there was very little PVY present and no other known diseases of concern, he said.

Growers did have to work hard to deal with a “hot and dry” summer, he noted. Nonetheless, 100 percent of the growers voluntarily participated in the Potato Cyst Nematode survey. Fortunately, there was no evidence of the nematodes being present.

Adding a touch of humor to the seminar was Tamara Hall, Bozeman, Montana motivational humorist and seminar presenter. The Bar J Ranch Wranglers, a Jackson Hole, Wyoming western group, provided the entertainment for the closing banquet and won a standing ovation.

Researchers Build Case Against Insect as “Zebra Chip” Culprit

By Jan Suszkiw

Tiny, cicadalike insects called psyllids are the prime suspects in Agricultural Research Service (ARS) investigations into the “zebra chip” disorder of potatoes.

Zebra chip (ZC) refers to dark, unsightly stripes that appear inside afflicted tubers, especially when cut and fried to make chips.

The disorder was first reported in Mexican potato fields in 1994, then in U.S. spuds in 2000 near Pearsall, Texas, and the Texas side of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Outbreaks from 2004 to 2006 in Mexico, Texas and other U.S. states cost growers and processors on both sides of the border millions of dollars in losses.

The cause of ZC isn’t known yet, but Jim Crosslin and Joseph Munyaneza’s studies show a strong correlation to feeding by the psyllid species Bactericera cockerelli.

Crosslin, a plant pathologist in the ARS Vegetable and Forage Crops Research Unit, Prosser, Wash., and Munyaneza, an entomologist in the ARS Yakima Agricultural Research Laboratory, Wapato, Wash., consider B. cockerelli an “insect of interest” for several reasons: Potato plants are favorite hosts; its nymph stage injects toxins that cause psyllid yellows disease, whose symptoms resemble ZC’s; it was prevalent in ZC-infested fields Munyaneza surveyed in south Texas in 2004; and it winters in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and migrates north in the spring.

In experiments, the researchers used two groups of potato plants—one with psyllids and one without. In greenhouse trials with psyllid-exposed plants, ZC symptoms appeared in nearly 26 percent of tubers and 60 percent of fried chips. In field trials, the percentages were 15 and 57 percent, respectively. Psyllid-free plants showed no symptoms.

Using genetic fingerprinting methods, the researchers also checked the plants for phytoplasmas that cause potato purple-top wilt syndrome (PPTWS), whose symptoms resemble ZC. The tests were negative, however, suggesting ZC wasn’t associated with PPTWS or leafhoppers that transmit PPTWS.

Crosslin notes that monitoring psyllids and targeting them with sprays appears to be an effective prevention method. Indeed, a McAllen, Texas, associate told of reducing potato losses from several hundred acres in 2006 to 50 this year.

Ag Partnership Receives USDA Grant, Announces Keynote Speaker

MOSES LAKE, WA – A three-state partnership of Northwest potato and tree fruit organizations has been successful in securing grant funds for grower education, including their 2008 annual meeting keynote addresses.

On Oct. 2, USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) Spokane Regional Office announced the awarding of over $1.3 million in partnership agreements to help provide new ways for producers to manage agricultural risks, including grower outreach and educational opportunities.

The Washington State Potato Commission (WSPC) led a coalition of the Washington, Oregon and Idaho potato commissions and the Washington Growers Clearing House in successfully applying for over $99,000 in grant funds for educational workshops and other activities. The RMA grant, the third such successful application, will build on previous education and information to provide marketing seminars, cost of production calculators, pest risk assessment and management tools, and the keynote speaker for the annual meetings of the three partners.

“We are very pleased this grant came through for all the partners,” said Karen Bonaudi, WSPC assistant executive director and grant administrator. “For ag groups it makes the difference between carrying out these educational activities and having or not being able to have a keynoter.”

Earlier this year the partners had identified the current focus on sustainable farming, what it means and its impacts on production farming as the topic they wanted addressed at their annual meetings. The presenter they have selected is Jay Lehr, Ph.D., scientist, adviser, author and motivational speaker.

Dr. Lehr has testified before Congress on more than three-dozen occasions on environmental issues and consulted with nearly every agency of the federal government as well as with many foreign countries.  He has spoken before more than 1,000 audiences on topics ranging from the impact of advancing technologies on the global economy to climate change and biotechnology to health and physical fitness.

Dr. Lehr is considered a leading authority on groundwater hydrology.  After graduating from Princeton University at the age of 20 with a degree in geological engineering, he went on to receive the nation’s first Ph.D. in groundwater hydrology from the University of Arizona.  Dr. Lehr is the author of more than 400 magazine and journal articles and more than a dozen books, among them the 12-volume series Water Encyclopedia: Surface and Agricultural Water (2005).

Dr. Lehr will be speaking on The Future of Sustainable Agriculture at the following key meetings in 2008: Idaho Potato School, Jan. 23; Oregon Potato Commission annual meeting, Jan. 31; Washington Growers Clearing House annual meeting, Feb. 5; and the Washington State Potato Conference, Feb. 6.

Funding for these agreements is available under the Federal Crop Insurance Act.  RMA is committed to providing farmers and ranchers in the region with quality risk management products, tools and information, according to Dave Paul, director of RMA’s Spokane Regional Office.

“We are very excited about the diversity of the new partnership agreements in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and we look forward to working with the recipients to ensure the success of each project,” he said.

Golden Nematode: A Thumbnail Sketch

The golden nematode is one of two closely related species collectively known as “cyst nematodes.” The other species is called the “pale cyst nematode,” and this is the species that has recently been found in southeastern Idaho. Both are native to South America, in the region of the potato’s origin. Golden nematode has spread to about 60 countries across the world. Until recently, it was only known in New York and Vancouver Island in North America. With recent finds in Quebec and now in Alberta, it appears to be firmly established in Canada.

Pest Biology and Symptoms
Golden nematodes inhabit the soil and feed on roots, and rarely tubers, of potato plants and roots of a few close relatives such as tomatoes, eggplant and some related weeds. The nematodes are sedentary root parasites, staying put once they find a feeding site on the roots. Mature females swell into golden-colored (and later dark brown) egg-shaped cysts about 2 mm long. In each are 200-500 eggs. Cysts can persist in the soil, with viable eggs inside, for up to 20 years. Eggs hatch only in response to roots of potato plants. Symptoms of golden nematode infection include poor growth, stunting, sickly yellow appearance, wilting at midday, and premature death. Infected areas of fields enlarge with each potato crop and the density of the nematode population increases as well. The nematode moves to new areas in the soil. Most often the soil is associated with farm equipment and seed potatoes. The nematode cysts can also be blown in the wind from one field to another.

Management
Once established in a field, golden nematode is essentially impossible to eradicate. The best way to avoid nematode damage in that field is never to plant potatoes in it again. Soil fumigation can be used to manage this nematode; one labeled product is Telone II. Non-fumigated nematicides can also be used. In places where golden nematode is established, it is managed mostly through crop rotation and the planting of resistant potato varieties. For example, there has been extensive work on golden nematode resistant varieties for the potato growers of New York where golden nematode is established.

Why the Fuss?
There are two primary reasons that this pest is regulated by quarantine. The first is that introduction of any new pest to a country or state leads to an increase in the cost of production for the affected crop. If golden nematode becomes established, it will never go away, and our industry will have to cope with it as an additional cost of production. We would also have to be sure to manage it in a way that it does not develop resistance to pesticides or overcome resistance genes in resistant varieties. Let’s think about another invasive pest that costs growers a lot: green peach aphid. Imagine all the money that has been spent on this pest over the past century or two since the aphid was introduced. It would have been worth the trouble to keep the aphid out, had there been the controls in place we have today for golden nematode.

The other big reason this is a regulated pest: Many other countries around the world still do not have the pest and very much want to avoid acquiring it. Therefore, there are strict quarantines in place all over the world, which prohibit importation of potatoes from regions with known golden nematode infestations. All states in the U.S. that export fresh or seed potatoes therefore have a strong incentive to avoid golden nematode. A major consequence to Washington of an established golden nematode population likely would be loss of international export markets and restrictions on domestic sales and transport as well.

Revamping Relationships Among Cultivated Potatoes

By Ann Perry

“One potato, two potato, three potato, four” turns out to be exactly right—when classifying cultivated potatoes, that is. Scientists at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the International Potato Center (CIP) have used morphology—the outward appearance of a plant—in combination with molecular markers to revise the number of potato species from seven to four.

Until recently, potato species designations have been based primarily on morphological characteristics and estimates—often incorrect—of how many chromosome sets they possessed.

Botanist David Spooner works in the ARS Vegetable Crops Research Unit, Madison, Wis. His initial research with CIP colleagues in Peru indicated that morphological variations among cultivated potatoes were not reliable indicators of species.

They then examined DNA molecular markers from 742 cultivated potato varieties and eight wild relatives of potatoes. Based on results from this study and previous studies, Spooner and CIP lead scientist Marc Ghislain concluded that cultivated potato varieties could most accurately be assigned to one of four species.

They refined the species designations by checking each potato variety for the presence of one particular DNA mutation. This characteristic mutation distinguishes between potatoes from the Chilean lowlands and potatoes from the high Andes.

Solanum tuberosum—the type of domesticated potato eaten around the world—is one of the four recognized species. This is by far the most common potato species and has from two to four sets of chromosomes.

The less common potato species—S. ajanhuiri, S. juzepczukii and S. curtilobum—have two, three and five sets of chromosomes, respectively. These can often be distinguished from each other by morphological data.

This new system of species classification eliminates much of the guesswork that previously served as the foundation for the potato classification system. Potato breeders will benefit greatly from a classification system that groups related collections by combining traditional morphological with modern molecular methods.

A paper reporting the results of this study was published last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
