-Congratulations to the Earthlight Documentary Team for winning an EMMY! The University of Arizona Controlled Environment Agriculture Center in collaboration with Cody Sheehy, [CALS Video Coordinator] created the Earthlight Documentary based from the Research and Development of the NASA Steckler Mars-Lunar Greenhouse project, and through Sheehy’s efforts was awarded an EMMY. New to the 2016 course are specific half-day sessions on “Indoor Growing” and “Lighting for Growing Crops in CEA.” In addition to the new sessions, the short course will feature a comprehensive program that will help you successfully grow crops within controlled environments and ensure those crops thrive and are marketable. Our speakers and experts have over 250 years of combined experience in Controlled Environment Agriculture and are available to answer your questions both during and after the course. There is also an option to receive a DVD of the lectures if you cannot tune in to watch any of the live lectures. All attendees will now also have the option to add a DVD of the lectures to their registration for a small fee, but lectures will be available for all paid attendees in an internet database for 90 days after the conclusion of the course. Sakata Seed America Earns GSPP Accreditation, Now Offers Numerous GSPP Certified Tomato Varieties
Morgan Hill, June 2015 – Sakata Seed America has announced their GSPP certification, as of May 2015. This exciting new certification will bring added value to Sakata’s distributor network and their customers, and serves as a promising opportunity for future growth in the industry. GSPP, or ‘Good Seed and Plant Practices’ accreditation is an accreditation system based on a process approach (prophylactic measures) to prevent seed and plant transmitted pathogens in tomato seed. In layman’s terms, the GSPP accreditation process is a lengthy process dedicated to ensuring seed is immaculately clean and free of pathogens and disease through a company-audit examining quality management, protocol procedures and work methods. GSPP seed provides added benefit to the grower by ensuring that the purchased seed is clean, pure and unable to spread disease to other crops in their program. GSPP applies to the tomato crop and is mainly concerned with the pathogen, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. Michiganensis, or Cmm.
GSPP accreditation is a voluntary process which recognizes an organization for respecting the rules of GSPP and its ability to be competent to produce and market tomato seed free of Cmm. The procedure is extensive and requires true dedication from the company in question. Accredited companies must have a quality management system, work methods and information supply that comply with the high GSPP standard. “Sakata is committed to providing the market with the quality products they need to be successful. Offering GSPP certified seed is an extension of that commitment. Now growers that really need GSPP product can get the quality Sakata varieties they want with this added value,” states Rhonda Jones, Sakata’s Logistics and Operations Manager. Sakata Seed America is now authorized to store, treat, process package and distribute GSPP certified tomato seed for the NAFTA market. Sakata Seed America’s sister company, SVE, based in France, has been GSPP accredited since July 29th, 2010.
Moving forward, Sakata will now offer customers the following commercial varieties as GSPP. The list of varieties offering GSPP certified seed will continue to grow as varieties continue to be developed.
NIMITZ™ nematicide receives state registration in California
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 16, 2015) – ADAMA, a world leader in customer-focused agricultural solutions, announced today that NIMITZ nematicide received state registration in California for use on tomatoes, peppers, okra, eggplant, cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupe and squash.

With its fast-acting and unique mode of action, NIMITZ raises industry standards. As a truer, more complete contact nematicide, it also fills a void in the absence of methyl bromide.
Power of simplicity
NIMITZ represents the first new chemical nematicide to be introduced in more than 20 years. The product’s label carries the least restrictive signal word – ‘Caution’.
In contrast to fumigant nematicides, NIMITZ simplifies nematode management by lessening complex handling practices and application restrictions. The result is no Fumigant Management Plans, no 24-hour field monitoring, no buffer zones, no re-entry interval (REI), no specialized equipment and minimal personal protective equipment (PPE).
“NIMITZ is a contact nematicide, not a fumigant,” says Herb Young, ADAMA brand leader. “And because of its residual activity, NIMITZ’s control of nematodes often exceeds the commercial standards. The distinct advantage over other nematicides is that it frees growers from complications, liabilities, and dangers associated with fumigants.”
A better solution
As a non-gas formulation, the active ingredient in NIMITZ is distributed through the soil and into contact with nematodes through irrigation or rainfall. Unlike older chemistries, there is no mandatory tarping or specialized machinery requirement. Applications may include broadcast or banding with mechanical incorporation or through drip-injection.
As a ‘true nematicide’, NIMITZ causes irreversible nematicidal activity which results in pest mortality within 48 hours of application, rather than temporary nematostatic (immobilizing) activity as seen with organophosphates and carbamate nematicides.
“NMITZ is lethal to nematodes. As a result, we see greatly improved root health all season which leads to yield enhancement,” says Young.
The EPA wrote in the Federal Docket on July 24, 2014 that, “Fluensulfone (NIMITZ) represents a safer alternative for nematode control with a new mode of action and a much simpler and straightforward product label.”
A secondary crop tier has been submitted to the EPA for future registration on potatoes, strawberries, carrots, tobacco and turf.
As new tool for California vegetable growers, NIMITZ has the potential to bring safety and simplicity to the nematode control arena which is constantly under increasing regulatory pressure.
